The city of San Leandro is located in the eastern San Francisco Bay area (Alameda County, California), just south of Oakland and about 20 miles southeast of the city of San Francisco. The Oakland International Airport is about a five-minute drive away. Discovered on March 20, 1772, and incorporated on March 21, 1872 (exactly one hundred years plus one day later), San Leandro is today a diverse city with a rich heritage and many cultural amenities including a 450-berth Marina, two golf courses and a large community library. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, San Leandro became widely known for its delicious cherries, giving rise to its annual Cherry Festival, first held in 1909 and still celebrated today.
San Leandro is able to boast an extensive park system consisting of 23 recreation facilities which include neighborhood parks, swimming pools and athletic fields. Three swimming pools and ten large group picnic areas are available for use.
